Game Design Theory: What Makes Battle Royale so Popular?

We will analyze the zeitgeist and core game mechanics of the Battle Royale genre (Fortnite/PUBG) using popular video game design theories and frameworks: MDA, Flow, Intensity Engagement Curve, PENS, and more. Would Battle Royale be so popular without streamers? The aim of our dissection is not simply to add another clone into this crowded field; instead, our goal with this analysis is to extrapolate lessons from Battle Royale that we can use on other genres, both traditional and new.
